GreenYellow: Making electricity storage accessible to businesses
A partnership to control and monetise on-site batteries
On-site storage is drawing growing interest from industrial and commercial companies. With volatile electricity prices and the growing electrification of operations, a battery helps businesses keep energy costs under control, make their sites more resilient and open up new revenue streams through flexibility. Yet projects often stall on three points: the upfront investment, day-to-day operation, and uncertainty over flexibility revenues.
Since 2007, GreenYellow has worked with industrial companies, commercial businesses and local authorities that want to change the way they consume and produce energy. Its principle: the client doesn’t have to carry the project. GreenYellow designs the installation, finances it, operates it and commits to its results. Depending on the site, this can mean energy efficiency work, solar panels, electrifying certain equipment or, increasingly, batteries. The group now has 1,400 clients in around fifteen countries.
To remove the barriers to storage deployment, GreenYellow and Tilt have formed a partnership that brings together two complementary areas of expertise. GreenYellow designs, finances, builds, operates and maintains the storage infrastructure. Tilt controls the batteries in real time, optimises their operation across several markets and monetises their flexibility directly with RTE (RE, RR, AA, OE) and on Nord Pool.
This partnership reflects a shift in Battery-as-a-Service: financing alone is no longer enough, and a battery’s value depends more and more on how well it is controlled. Tilt’s platform combines forecasting, smart control and direct access to electricity markets to activate each battery at the right time, based on the site’s needs and signals from the power system.
